WHAT IS IT?

By the late 1990s, it was clear that Jaguar was late to the game when it came to a performance/halo sub-model. Mercedes had AMG, BMW had Motorsports, even Audi had its RS models. Jaguar had an ever-aging demographic and a cushy, country club reputation. Enter the supercharged XKR coupe and XJR sedan, both powered by a supercharged V8 with nearly 400-horsepower. Car and Driver said that the “R” could stand for “regal, rambunctious or ravishing.” This one in the classic colors of Metallic Black and Biscuit certainly earns all of those adjectives. If notorious East End gangsters The Kray Brothers were around in the early aughts, this would have been their whip.

WHY THIS CAR HAS BEST ONE ON THE PLANET CHOPS

Early aughts Jaguars of any model are getting rare. The fourth-owner syndrome usually hits them hard, wherein the bottom-feeder who buys a fully-depreciated, complex 20+ year old luxury car finds out just how expensive these are to keep on the road. This car, with under 25,000 miles looks to have had no deferred maintenance. Every surface seems to exhibit proper maintenance. The lack of curb rash on the wheels is consistent with this. We always say, you can tell a lot about the condition of a used car by looking at the hood insulation pad. This one is perfect. The XJR is for sale at Vantage Auto in New Jersey for $27,000.

Love it. I always thought this generation of Jaguar had great classic proportions and the XJR adds a terrific stance with those wheels. Great presence for the money.

Veteran auto journalist Mike Spinelli is a long-term owner of one of these, and as far as I know, it hasn’t driven him into Chapter 7-land yet. I think these cars are insanely underrated, utterly sinister and super-desirable. This one looks like a potential BOOTP example.
