WHAT IS IT?
The 8 Series serves as the third generation of BMW’s flagship coupe lineage, succeeding the 1970s E9 coupes (2800CS/3.0CS) and the 6 Series of the late 1970s and 1980s. However, the new 8 Series represented a dramatic leap forward in both price and performance compared to the inline-six powered 6 Series.
Launched in the U.S. for the 1991 model year, the flagship initially debuted with a V12 engine (850i), followed later by a V8 variant (840i)—both offered with either a 4-speed automatic or a rare 6-speed manual transmission. Model designations shifted slightly to “Ci” after 1993. The ultimate iteration was the performance-focused 850CSi, which featured upgraded suspension tuning and a power boost to 372 hp (up from 296 hp in the standard V12). The 8 Series was ultimately withdrawn from the U.S. market after the 1997 model year.
