1999 BMW Z3 M Coupe
The Z3M Coupe was a thoroughly quirky and unconventional solution to the dilemma of the Z3 roadster’s perceived lack of testosterone and torsional rigidity. At just under 2,800 lbs. and packing 320 horsepower, in what was still a very analog car, it might not be the fastest BMW ever, but it is one of the most visceral and exciting cars to wear the BMW roundel in the post-war era. Around 2,858 were produced and even if the vast majority survive, the Z3 M Coupe is still an exceedingly rare and desirable modern classic.
WHY THIS ONE HAS “BEST ONE ON THE PLANET” CHOPS
A lot of M Coupes have been heavily modified over the years or subjected to everything from track use to drifting. In-the-wrapper cars with freakishly low miles are rare. This Imola Red M Coupe has 4,500 one-owner miles on it, zero perceptible wear anyplace including the seat bolsters and dash buttons, and it’s a California car from new. Last time we checked, BMW Welt in Munich didn’t have a near-perfect Imola Red ’99 Z3 M Coupe on the premises, so we’re going to call this one the Best on the Planet.
THE VERDICT
BMW expert Juror Andy Reid speaks for the panel on this one: “While I love Z3 coupes of any stripe, there are enough things about this one that are off-putting and lead me to believe that there are better ones out there. For example, the rear badge is faded, and the airbag cover is also faded, and the liberal and uneven application of ArmorAll isn’t really helping. It’s almost as though this car spent some time sitting outside.”
